Our story

We walk with people from trauma toward hope — one horse, one hour, one honest moment at a time.

Shining Light Sanctuary is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in Peaster, Texas, serving Weatherford, Parker County, and the greater DFW area. We support Veterans, at-risk children and youth — including those connected to the foster care community — and the families beside them through animal-assisted activities, farm-life experiences, animal husbandry, life-skills education, and seasonal camps and events. No diagnosis is required, no paperwork stands in the way, and nothing costs a dollar.

Our mission is to create a safe, uplifting space where individuals grow stronger, reconnect with purpose, and experience lasting transformation — improving well-being as they recover, rebuild, grow, and give back, strengthening the communities they call home. We have also developed a scholarship and sponsorship program so that finances are never a barrier to receiving support.

Why this exists

It started with a herd
and a hard season.

Our founder, Nik, saw what a horse could do for a person carrying something too heavy to say out loud. A horse does not ask what happened. It reads posture, breathing, and intention, and it answers honestly. For someone who has stopped trusting people, that honesty is often the first door back.

Shining Light Sanctuary grew out of that: a place in Peaster, Texas where Veterans, children and youth, and families could come and simply be with animals — brushing, feeding, leading, learning — without a bill, a waitlist, or a label.

We keep every program free because the people who need it most are rarely the people who can pay for it.

Our method has four legs

Meet the herd.

Our Gypsy Vanners are not scenery. They are the reason the work works — patient, heavy-boned, unhurried horses who meet people exactly where they are.

Galileo

The clown of the herd. He breaks tension faster than any conversation can, which makes him the one we bring out on the hardest days.

Milky Way

Steady, watchful, endlessly patient. She is usually the first horse a nervous visitor meets, and the reason they come back.

The need we meet

The help exists.
Getting to it is the problem.

Many Veterans, at-risk youth, and families in our community struggle with trauma, instability, isolation, and limited access to supportive, restorative programs. Parker County and the greater DFW region lack free, hands-on, relationship-centered activities that build resilience and life skills.

Shining Light Sanctuary meets this need with free animal-assisted activities, farm-life experiences, animal husbandry, life-skills education, and seasonal camps. Through structured interactions with animals and mentors, participants recover, grow, and strengthen their overall well-being and connection to community.
